Overview
There are a variety of ways that you can grade assignments in Pear Assessment. You can access grading tools and features via the "Live Class Board" section of a specific assignment of a test. Please note that students' assessments MUST be marked as "Submitted" in order to begin the grading process.
Below you will find the different options for grading assessments.
Express Grader
The Express Grader allows you to see responses and grade them as you go. The Express Grader functions as a table with cells representing a student's individual response to a question. Each cell will have a different color background which indicates grading value.
| Green | Full credit is given to the student |
| Yellow | Partial credit is given to the student |
| Red | No credit is given to the student |
| Blue | This question requires manual grading |
| Grey | The student skipped the question |
The Express Grader is a great way to view students' responses and be reminded of the correct answers as you go. You can also provide student feedback as well!
Students are shown on the right (up and down) and questions are shown at the top (side to side). This is important because you can choose which direction to go when using the Express Grader: up and down to grade one question at a time student by student OR side to side to grade one student at a time question by question.
Step One
Go to the "Assignments" tab.
Step Two
Click the "Express Grader" tab. You will see all the questions and student responses in the table. You can choose from two "View Modes" (score or response) as shown in the video below.
Step Three
Select a cell from the table and an expanded menu will appear. Here you will see the question, the student's answer, and the correct answer. You can change the points given to the right. These will automatically save as you go.
After you have graded the student's response you can decide to continue grading this question for the rest of the students by selecting "Previous Student" or "Next Student" at the bottom. You can also decide to continue grading that particular student by selecting "Next Question" or "Previous Question.
You can press exit at any time to see your progress on the table. Once you have graded all students the following message will appear "Congratulations. You have finished grading all students." Click "Exit" to return to the Express Grader.
Grid Edit Grading
Grid Edit is a fast way to manually enter scores in Pear Assessment. Grid Edit allows you to edit the score for individual students and individual questions using "cells" (just like a Google Sheet). Each cell represents a question for an individual student. Each cell will have a different color background which indicates grading value.
| Green | Full credit is given to the student |
| Yellow | Partial credit is given to the student |
| Red | No credit is given to the student |
| Blue | This question requires manual grading |
| Grey | The student skipped the question |
Another important piece is saving grades. When using the Grid Edit Grading the cells will autosave and a "score updated" notification will appear in the bottom left-hand corner. You will also see the color of the cell change depending upon the credit given for that specific question/individual.
Step One
Go to the "Assignments" tab.
Step Two
Find the assessment you would like to grade. You can either click the "Live Class Board" link or click the "Express Grader" to take you directly to the grading tab.
Step Three
Select the "Express Grader" tab at the top of the screen. On the right-hand side click the "Grid Edit" toggle from "OFF" to "ON". In order to use grid edit, you must turn it on every time.
You will now be able to edit scores by typing directly in the cell. You will the "Score is Successfully Updated" notification and the color of the cell will change as needed.
It is important to note that grid edit grading cannot be used with the "Response" View Mode. That is not supported at this time.
